Wow - for ONCE...I agree. Breeding unsound horses, prone to injuries, generally sensitive...it's not good for the breed as a whole. I would never send a mare to Big Brown.
Is it possible to actually agree with PETA if you are a racing fan? This time I do.
While not breeding with him might be the right thing to do, it's easier to make that judgement when you aren't looking at millions and millions of dollars stacked in front of you. IEAH doesn't seem to be in it for the sport either, and if it was me, I couldn't walk away from that kind of money either.
Of course, if people would stop sending mares to be bred to these chronically unsound horses in the first place, the market would dry up and sensibility and sanity might return to the entire business.
Agree, Jim. On this site, I've long lobbied the sport to stop breeding fragile, oft-injured, long-recovering horses. He's one.
If the sport wants to continue perpetuating the breed by putting unsound horses to stud, so be it. But you HAVE to question the person who wants to send their mare to horses like this.
I have to be the one here to disagree with PETA. If you want to send your mare to Big Brown, you should have every right to do it. I do NOT understand why you would want to, but its that persons choice. We all love this sport, but it is still a business. Sometimes people become very wealthy in this sport and because of that, greed will unfortunatley be apart of this great game.
For PETA to try to tell Big Browns camp how to run their business is absurd. Is there a problem with breeding? Sure, but gelding Big Brown is not the answer. Would I send my mare to Big Brown? NO. But we also must remember that the next Triple Crown Winner might come from a Big Brown bred horse. Are your chances of breeding a more fragile horse from Big Brown greater? Probably, but because of greed and that chance of having the next great racehorse, this promblem will not cease to exist.
I am not saying there is no problem with breeding, but I will NOT agree with PETA. Hopefully changes will be made, but let them be made on our terms, NOT PETA's.
