Sunday's (8-31-08) 10-race Del Mar card features the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby (race 9) for three-year-olds traveling nine furlongs on the turf, and #4 MADEO (8-1) is my horse of the day.

MADEO has always been highly regarded, and after winning two straight in March/April, he was made the overwhelming favorite in the $76k Alydar Stakes. He missed by a neck in that event, and a last place finish (slow start) off a layoff in the compact Swaps (G2) followed.

He made his turf bow in the La Jolla (G2) on August 9th here, and he rallied nicely (steadied early) from disadvantageous outer post in a better than appears effort.

He figured to handle the sod based on his pedigree (Mizzen Mast-Passion Flower), and much better is anticipated with a clean trip. He lands a much better post for this, and Mike Smith has options with the versatile colt.

Day 41 Del Mar Horse du Jour: #4 MADEO (race 9)

Day 40 Del Mar Horse du Jour Gotta Have Her (6.90-1) rallied strongly in the stretch to just miss in the Grade 2 Palomar Handicap. Clement fav Vacare got the job done by a hard fought ½ length, with Gotta Have Her and Kris’s Sis dead-heating for the place.

My Stats 23-1-5-2 (-39.80)

Meet-To-Date Statistics: 39-2-7-3 (-64)
