Pat,
Kudos for not being afraid of transparency. Horse racing is a humbling game. It has a cumulative affect, parsing out snippets of wisdom as we age.
I wouldn't give up on Kentucky Bear. His stumble at the Preakness break, coupled with the resulting slow start which left him too far behind, is a legitimate excuse. The colt made a nice middle-move before tiring.
Ironic isn't it? The lack of seasoning which some felt would do in Big Brown in the Derby caught up to Kentucky Bear in the Preakness. Sometimes the fundamentals of racing work in mysterious ways.
Not to mention that he ran into Riley Tucker and Gayego who were absolutely staggering at the end. I thought Gayego would cause the most trouble, and he did - for Kentucky Bear. That being said, he still wasn't going to win, but I think an unfettered run up the rail could have had him in front of Icabod Crane.
Baker loves Philly Park, so we might see Kentucky Bear in for the $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby on Labor Day.
I think Kentucky Bear's race was over before the stretch. I don't understand the middle move... when do you see a horse make a big move four furlongs out and keep it going unless you're special?
