Keeneland Horse du Jour – Day 2 (Saturday, October 4, 2008)

A year ago we got off to a terrific start with the Keeneland Horse du Jour when our pick Purim won the Shadwell Turf Mile at 19-1. We’ll try to see if lightning can strike twice as we come back to the exact same event for this year’s pick.

There were a number of accomplished turfers in last year’s edition of this event but this year there are significantly more fringe players who seem to need to break through. Included among those is #9 SOCIETY’S CHAIRMAN, a Canadian trained by Roger Attfield, a top conditioner from north of the border. This son of Not Impossible was started for a tag and he certainly made his connections feel quite lucky that they didn’t lose this guy at the claim box that afternoon. He came out of that event and won a N1X allowance heat right here at Keeneland before narrowly missing in the Connaught Cup at Woodbine. The only bad races he has run since then were over a yielding turf course and Polytrack.

He seems to prefer very firm turf and that’s exactly what they’ll race on this afternoon. His last start, a stakes event restricted to Canadians, was very impressive as he contested the hot pace and still held on gamely. He’s 2 for 2 at this distance and you can’t underestimate how big the “horse for course” angle can be at this racetrack.

DAY 2 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 8, #9 SOCIETY’S CHAIRMAN

DAY 1 RECAP: Desert Stormelite rallied gamely to finish 2nd at 7-1 after she was outmoved by a graded stakes winner who picked up her first win on turf.

MEET TOTALS: 1: 0-1-1

Good luck!
