Keeneland Horse du Jour – Day 4 (Wednesday, October 8, 2008)

The fourth day of the meet is headlined by a series of strong allowance races as big fields dot the card. Another big weekend is on tap as the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) is scheduled for Saturday along with the Perryville (G3).

The fourth race on Wednesday’s card is a 30k N2L claimer at six furlongs on the Polytrack. There is not a great amount of proven Polytrack form in here nor are there a number of horses who have done well over this particular surface. The morning line favorite is #12 DELILAH’S SEVEN, a daughter of Sky Mesa who has run two very strong races on Polytrack in her brief career. She has drawn a tough post but her style makes her post position a non-issue.

Taking the favorite in a wide-open race like this is no fun, so looking elsewhere you find a perfectly logical alternative like #9 JANE’S BABY. She’s a daughter of Royal Academy who’s making her third start off a layoff and will be going from turf to a synthetic surface. Her trainer, Walter Bindner, wins at a 29% clip with horses going turf-synthetic and this gal has proven form over Polytrack and conventional dirt. You must be careful when dealing with turf horses trying synthetics if they’ve never run well on conventional dirt, but this gal has and is thus a very solid play at or around her morning line of 4-1.

DAY 4 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 4, #9 JANE’S BABY

DAY 3 RECAP: Indescribable was scratched from the Spinster thus cancelling our play.

MEET TOTALS: 2: 0-1-0

Good luck!
