The Thursday feature is an optional claimer for older fillies and mares who have not won an allowance race in 2008. A pair of supporting races including a nifty N1X allowance event for two year-olds are also on the card. That allowance race features our Horse du Jour.
The 5th race is a 50k claimer for older fillies and mares going once around the Keeneland Polytrack and a contentious field has been assembled. The morning line indicates that it might be very difficult for the public to choose a clear-cut favorite in this event. Let’s take a look at some of the contenders.
#1 PATRICIA- This gal was on a nice mini-roll at Tampa earlier this year as she won three races in a row on the lawn. She floundered when placed against tougher and was ultimately claimed from trainer Forrest Kaelin by David Vance. She hasn’t won since joining Vance’s barn but also has faced largely tougher company. Her complete lack of early speed would seem to make her a dicey play at her morning line of 3-1. However, do note her record at this racetrack.
#3 PROMISE ME A PRIZE- Daughter of Prized hasn’t been out since late August in Erie, PA but she was facing tougher company in those events. She has earned six career victories on synthetic surfaces, is working beautifully and her trainer has a positive record with horses off mid-range layoffs. This gal won’t be as far off the pace as the railbird and that’s a positive. She seems like an attractive alternative to the horses getting the brunt of the play.
#4 CLASSIC TIARA- This gal was claimed out of her last start by trainer Tom Amoss, who wins at a rate of 29% of his recent claims. She is the main speed in here and jockey Miguel Mena might find himself isolated on the lead as they move up the backstretch. That being said, she doesn’t have a wire-to-wire victory showing in her PPs and the notion that she may get free and clear will earn her plenty of support at the windows.
#7 DRAGUM- Louisiana Downs invader has been running exclusively on the turf in 2008 and has run a number of solid races, including an allowance tally two back on the Franks turf course. She has a good record over the dirt, which usually portends the ability to handle synthetic surfaces and her trainer has an outstanding record with horses running on synthetics and moving to synthetics from turf.
