The 3rd race on the Thursday program at Keeneland is a starter allowance event for older horses who have started for a claiming price of $16,000 or less in 2007-2008 at a mile and a quarter on the Polytrack. A field of nine is lined up and with a confirmed speedster on the rail, it looks like a wide-open event that should be honestly run from start to finish.

#1 SPOKALU- This gelded son of Smart Strike is making his first start for trainer Jim Corrigan and is one of two that that trainer has in this event. He has earned two wins in seven starts at Emerald Downs and when he visits winners’ circle, he does it emphatically. He won his last start by 10˝ lengths and two starts before that he broke his maiden by 18 lengths. After setting an opening half-mile of :44 and 3/5 last time out on the conventional dirt it seems like a safe bet that he’ll be on the lead this afternoon.

#2 TONY TERRIFIC- A four-time winner, this son of Gone West will be making his first start for trainer Neil Pessin this afternoon. He has been competitive at this level for quite some time and is actually dropping out of a much tougher N2X allowance heat at Arlington Park. He is completely void of early speed and that will put him in a very tough spot this afternoon but if the frontrunners get weary, he’ll be the one to pick up the pieces.

#3 TWISTING ROAD- Twice an “in the money” finisher at Keeneland, this son of Giant’s Causeway is coming out of a 35k claimer on turf at Arlington where he tried to rally into a slow pace on a boggy turf course while very wide. His last two starts on Polytrack were both narrow misses that led to runner-up finishes. He just worked a half-mile to tighten the screws and his trainer Dale Bennett wins all over the midwest at a very high clip.

#4 SPEAKSOFTLYANCARRY- Presidential candidate John McCain referenced the saying of former President Theodore Roosevelt in the Presidential debate Tuesday evening for which this son of Real Quiet is named. He has won three races in a row and is now spotted nicely in this starter allowance heat. He took to the Tapeta at Presque Isle without an issue but the jury’s still out about whether winners over that surface take to the Keeneland Polytrack. I’d be more inclined to take the other Corrigan trainee based on the pace scenario.

#5 BAGOGA- Cody Autrey trainee dug in gamely in a N2X optional claimer on the weeds at Louisiana last time out and is in absolutely terrific form right now. He has proven he’s capable of going any distance and he is equally adept on turf and dirt. Whether he can win on synthetics will be answered this afternoon but in the meantime he is a serious win candidate.

#7 STRATOSTAR- A two-time winner over the Keeneland Polytrack, this son of Pulpit has proven to be a useful old guy. He scored in a 20k starter allowance event over this racetrack in April and beat two horses he faces again today in the process. He’s in good form having just finished 2nd in a money allowance optional claimer at Turfway and the potent duo of Albarado and McPeek are teaming up to try and do it again.
