The Friday feature is the $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View (G3) for three year-old fillies going a mile and a sixteenth on the turf. A large and talented field has been assembled and there will be a multitude of wagering opportunities for interested punters.
The 7th race is an optional claimer for older horses who haven’t won a race this year going six furlongs on the Polytrack. The likely favorite is #7 KELLY’S LANDING, who is a multiple graded stakes winner but has been inactive for quite some time.
#1 CITY NUMBER- Hugh Robertson trainee is going 2nd off a layoff and exits an even 3rd place finish over the Arlington Polytrack. He hasn’t really proven to be capable of competing with these types, but he has two sharp recent workouts, some back class, and comes from a good barn. You could do worse than this guy if the price is right.
#2 SANTANA STRINGS- This old warrior has been hitting it hard for quite some time and now goes 2nd off a layoff for trainer Steve Asmussen. He came back to the races off a layoff at Mountaineer and finished 2nd beaten a good distance but rallied well on a track that notoriously favors speedsters. He has a win over the Polytrack in a similar race 365 days ago and considering how slowly Asmussen runners go in the morning, this guy’s recent drills are solid.
#3 XELA- This guy was very sharp at the beginning of this year as he picked up consecutive wins at this meet on the Polytrack and turf. He has only one win since then but you can never underestimate how significant proven form over this racetrack is. He just worked sharply over this surface and lands in a race where his versatility fits nicely. He is a very good play at around 6-1.
#4 NATURAL SPEED- Son of 2002 Sprint Champion Orientate is making his first start for trainer Eduardo Caramori after making all 16 career starts for Steve Asmussen. He hasn’t started over the Polytrack here at Keeneland but has run well on turf, usually an ability that portends synthetic ability. He will bea part of the pace here and that makes him dangerous given that the early tempo might be dull. Seems like yet another contender in an evenly matched group.
#5 NAKAYAMA ARASHI- After coming to hand at Presque Isle this guy was moved into the big leagues and he proved unable to handle it, finishing a well-beaten sixth in the Phoenix (G3). He drops in class and should bounce back from the dull effort. There has to be some level of concern about his ability to run with this caliber of animals and the price will probably not be big enough.
#7 KELLY’S LANDING- Multiple graded stakes winner is going to be bet heavily today based on his back class and his score in the Phoenix (G3). However, it must be noted that he was extremely dull in his two starts and he wore a bar shoe in the latter of those two efforts at Churchill. He has never been quite as tough when fresh and that is discouraging as well. It seems like the only way to make money here is to beat this son of Patton.
