Just one of those things, I suppose Nick. The MSW races have some well-bred horses, much better than what Aqueduct gets, so that's a good thing. Otherwise, I guess Campo has to write races for the horses on the ground.
All that being said, Friday's card is pathetic. Lucky me - one of the two days I get to the Spa.
Nothing is what it used to be, I suppose, but I've yet to see any cards in recent times that rival the stinkers provided us by Mr. Battle back in the 90's, when 5 horse fields with a prohibitive favorite in each one were the norm.
Having said that, Saturday's card may be the weakest Saturday in Saratoga's long and storied history.
I don't think there is anyone to blame, and I'm pretty sure that ten years further down the road, we'll be looking back at 2008 as the "good old days".
Let's not forget that NYRA does a favor to the Breeders' Cup for running four stakes races, all "Win & You're In," on the same day, when many were run on separate days.
Very true, Pat. I don't know as how any favors are being done for the fans. I've heard that the positioning of the races was done for television, and I've also heard that it was done to position the races better for the horsemen.
Either way, it seems that the entire horse racing schedule is done working backwards from the Breeders Cup. In baseball, everything leads up to the World Series and in football it all leads up to the Super Bowl.
Is this day (oops - days) enough of a payoff for the damage inflicted on the rest of the year?
Just a question from somebody who enjoys the Cup, but also liked the way the races used to be set up (the Jockey Club Gold Cup for example) so that they meant a lot more than they do now.
