The Indianapolis Star pursues the topic now that Hoosier Park and Indiana Downs have slot machines. "The idea is to somehow use slots to encourage fan growth in horse racing. It hasn't been achieved very well in North America."

Great story that misses the point, in my opinion. Slots aren't there to generate new racing fans. Anyone who believes that will be disappointed. Slots are designed to buoy the industry so it keeps going for the rest of us. Without them, a host of tracks would eventually go under and the amount of racing would reduce.
Racetracks need more innovative, creative, and competitive ways to generate more business and more fans. Frankly, I think Indiana Downs is doing that.
The main sports talk station in Indianapolis has their studios sponsored by Indiana Downs and weekly on-site broadcasts from the track on a racenight. Can't hurt.
