I once interviewed a trainer at Saratoga and he said when a course if firm (not sure what CD was today), it's impossible for a lot of horses to not get over the surface. He said, "the harder the less likely surface preference plays a role." He and I were talking after his horse had just won a race after a long period of no rain.
Anyway, the point is that until Curlin gets to test those feet over a course with some serious give, we won't know how good he is on the grass. And there will be some give at the Arc, while similar "give" at Arlington or Belmont is less likely.
Considering Robby Albarado, who has ridden the horse in every start but one, felt like he got over the course well, I'll go with him. Though he is only a few ahead of TravisVOX on the all-time jockey wins list.
and by the way it's "play a r-o-l-e."
Now accepting applications: The NTamm1215 Curlin Fan Club.
Rules of the club:
- Knocking a likely short-priced favorite in a big race not allowed.
- Community memory block of Belmont Stakes.
The NTamm1215 Fan Club number 1 criteria would have to be that you had a win ticket on Curlin at 4-1, the last time he'll ever be offered at that price. Made up for a day of sorrows.
