Longshot winners make for record Pick Six carryover

SIGNONSANDIEGO

8:04 p.m. July 26, 2008

An almost unprecedented string of longshots Saturday led to a record Pick Six carryover at Del Mar of $1,561,987, which will be added to Sunday's Pick Six pool. The track's previous high carryover was $1,117,973 on July 29, 1990.

The six-race sequence saw every favorite defeated, several by stout outsiders. The upsets mean Sunday's Pick Six Pool at the track is likely to surpass the track's all-time Pick Six total pool of $3,555,771 established on August 15, 1998.

The prices in the day's final six races on the 10-race card were (5th) Dr. J.J. $12.60, (6th) Black Astor $11.80, (7th) Charlie's Moment $44.20, (8th) Weekend Escape $49.20, (9th) Storm Mesa $17.60 and (10th) Gold Star Status $49. Favorites were shutout in all 10 races.

The Pick Six did pay a record consolation prize of $218,977.40 to two ticket holders who had five of the winners.

Additionally, the track set a new Pick Four standard when only three tickets tabbed the last four races on the card for a payoff of $200,000.70, crushing the previous high of $85,945.80 set last year on July 22.

The record Pick Six carryover for Sunday is the result of a three-day carryover. The previous record was a four-day carryover.

Del Mar's total handle for the day was $20,531,679, the ninth-largest in its history.
