The $150,000 Rood and Riddle Dowager is the featured event on the Sunday program and an overflow field has been entered. Many of the competitors in here have been knocking heads with some of the best turf females in the country this year, so the outcome will certainly be interesting.#2 PALMILLA- The Robert G. Dick winner just missed in the Glens Falls two starts go then came back in the Flower Bowl (G1) where she was completely overmatched. She never factored into the decision and that might have had something to do with the condition of the turf course. Now, back on a firm course, she merits consideration. However, note this, she was no factor in the Bewitch here at this distance on this course in April and also has another three-turn allowance race buried in her past performances where she was a well-beaten fourth. Might she simply be a Delaware horse for course?#3 SOLVA- California invader may be in need of a plush turf course as the putting green courses out west have treated her poorly. She has also been running against much tougher competition and now goes 2nd off a layoff for Ben Cecil. She was in the mix early last time out and understandably tired in the lane, but shell need to be reserved early if shes going to stay the course in here. Im unsure of her ability to win this thing, but you cant imagine Cecil sent a horse this far who doesnt belong.#4 YOU DANCING DEVIL- Winner of two in a row for Neil Pessin as she just plain loves the Arlington green. She has never negotiated this type of distance and thats a big concern, especially considering her sire wanted little more than a mile. She will probably be overbet here based on those two wins at Arlington but Im not buying.#5 TEJIDA- Did Michael Matz get a little ambitious with this gal after she just missed in the Bewitch? She obviously couldnt hang with Mauralakana or Hostess and that doesnt hurt her chances to win here. Shes run well when fresh and is the main speed in here and that certainly makes her very, very tough. If she gets clear and can get a breather at some point, they may have a tough time running this gal down/#6 ALMONSOON- Half-sister to millionaires Geri and A.P. Arrow finally broke through in stakes company last time out in the Omnibus at Monmouth after it had been rained off the turf. She is a multiple winner over the grass but shes been completely unable to compete with solid stakes company and the connections will almost certainly guarantee that her price will be too low. #7 OH GLORY BE- Interesting daughter of Dixieland Band out of a Damascus mare began her career in England under the care of Richard Hannon. She picked up three wins over there, including a score at 12 furlongs in the EBF Spaceworks Furniture Handicap. She made her North American debut in the Robert Dick at Delaware and never fired, but that was her first race in eight months. She came back to finish a strong second in the Flamin Page at Woodbine and now goes 2nd off the mini-layoff and will be treated with lasix for the first time. There are some things to like about this gal, including her price.#8 HERBORISTE- Arguably the most consistent competitor in here, this gal finished second in the Cape Henlopen in her most recent start against males. She now returns off a brief layoff, will be ridden by Keeneland master Julien Leparoux and faces vastly inferior company than she has in recent efforts. If she could only lose what seems to be her inability to win, shed be one of the best bets of the meet. Although take a look at the distance and track where her last win came.#9 VIVA LA FLAG- Shug McGaughey is one of the few trainers in America who you have to watch with a keen eye when he moves allowance horses into stakes races and thats just the move hes making with this gal. She was put at a huge disadvantage last time out because of a horribly slow pace and the bottom line is that either of her last two races would make her a win candidate here. #12 CAPRICE- Graham Motion trainee has been somewhat disappointing in three starts in North America but has run well. She failed at 9/5 in her last start by a neck on the Polytrack but most importantly she went the 12 furlongs they will today with no issue. She is clearly a better horse on turf and the fact that she has a victory going this route is intriguing.DAY 13 RACE DU JOUR PLAY:$0.50 Trifecta#8 HERBORISTE, #9 VIVA LA FLAG, #12 CAPRICE with #5 TEJIDA, #8 HERBORISTE, #9 VIVA LA FLAG, #12 CAPRICE with ALLTOTAL: $45MEET TOTALS: $+183.35Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The third week of the Keeneland fall meet comes to a close after Sundays program and the featured event is the $150,000 Rood and Riddle Dowager for older fillies and mares at 12 furlongs on the turf. For more on that race check out the Race du Jour. The 7th race is an $80,000 optional claimer for older fillies and mares who have not won three races other than maiden, claiming, starter or state bred races. A field of eight has been assembled for this event and there should be a decent pace thanks to the presence of #8 SAINT PEGASUS, whos stretching out from a long series of sprint events. The morning line favorite is #6 KISS WITH A TWIST, who is dropping out of four consecutive stakes events for trainer Jose Fernandez. She has a win over a synthetic track but has never run over the Keeneland Polytrack.#2 CAT HOP is another mare dropping out of three consecutive turf stakes races but unlike the aforementioned favorite, she has a win over this track. She has been sharp in her recent races against better company and the fact that she has handled this racetrack is very encouraging. Trainer Merrill Scherer has won with 25% of his starters over synthetic surfaces and he has two entrants in here. If this gal is available at or around her morning line of 5-1, she is a very solid bet.DAY 13 HORSE du JOUR: Race 7, #2 CAT HOPDAY 12 RECAP: Glee Club was inexplicably taken nearly a thousand lengths off the lead in the nightcap and closed to split the field.MEET TOTALS: 11: 0-2-1Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The Saturday program is headlined by the $300,000 Lexus Raven Run (G2) for three year-old fillies going seven furlongs on the Polytrack. A field of 13 has been assembled and the wagering should be wide-open. The nightcap is a $54,000 allowance event for older horses who have not won two races other than going a mile on the turf. #4 QUIP is returning from a layoff for the high power barn of trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and will be heavily backed here as he ran a strong race on the weeds last time out at Belmont. There are certainly some issues with this colt and also with the other favorite, #5 JUST JULIAN, who has beaten up on inferior competition at Delaware. A nice priced alternative to the two favorites is #1 GLEE CLUB, an Ian Wilkes trainee who is going 3rd off a layoff and exits an optional claimer at Kentucky Downs where he made a premature, wide move for the lead and hung in the stretch. Calvin Borel is back on board today and this guy has been at his best with bo-rail astride. The rail post is advantageous given that there will be an honest pace in this event. If he can save some ground while stalking the pace, hell be in the mix in the stretch. At or around the morning line of 10-1, this guy is a solid gamble.DAY 12 HORSE du JOUR: Race 10, #1 GLEE CLUBDAY 11 RECAP: Scolara finished well down the middle of the track but could do no better than 4th.
In addition to the Raven Run later on the card, the $150,000 Sycamore will be offered as the 7th race and will kick off the late Pick 4. The Sycamore will also offer a large and competitive field and theres a good mixture of speedsters, stalkers, and closers entered in the group. #1 SILVERFOOT- The elder statesman of this field will be going to the post for the 34th time and while its become quite clear hes lost a step, hes been running well in graded stakes races since before some of these horses were born. He rallied but came up short as the favorite in the Kentucky Cup Turf (G3) last time out and he has only run one very strong race in the last year. He just worked well at Churchill and deserves some consideration but value will definitely not be available with Grandpa.#2 TELLING- This well-bred son of A.P. Indy moved about five furlongs too soon in the Turfway Fall Championship (G3) last time out and now goes back to the turf for trainer Steve Hobby. He finished second behind Silverfoot in the Stars n Stripes (G3) at Arlington on July 4 as he picked up the remaining pieces when that race completely imploded. He has some ability and his lone turf win was quite convincing but you cant help thinking that hes a little over his head today. #3 GUADALCANAL- The last minute addition to the Belmont Stakes (G1) has shown improvement since being moved back to the turf. He took a N1X event at Kentucky Downs going todays distance last time out and has worked three times since that win in fine fashion. He is substantially slower than the major contenders in here and will need a career-best effort to even have a shot at a superfecta finish.#4 TRANSDUCTION GOLD- Last years Sycamore winner is coming back east after two sharp efforts on the west coast. He had the lead turning for home in the Del Mar Handicap (G2) two back and didnt really factor in to the decision in the Clement Hirsch (G1) but both of those came against substantially tougher foes. He should get a great trip in here based on the large amount of speed entered and it is encouraging that trainer John Glenney just won a race on Thursday.#5 GOOD REQUEST- A perfect example of the now theyve got it figured out angle as this guy finally picked up his first win in career start #8 and has now peeled off two in a row. He gets the best jockey on the grounds today and his trainer needs no introduction in graded stakes races. Like Guadalcanal and Telling he seems a cut below the best in here but his best race puts him in the mix.#8 PHIL THE POWER- A true marathoner, this Joe Orseno trainee is coming off three strong efforts on the dirt going 12 furlongs. He hasnt been on the turf since earlier this year but every one of his two-turn grass efforts can be overlooked when youre dealing with this type of race. He has been much more effective going long and hes shown enough maturity this year to be considered a win candidate and a must-use in the Pick 4.#9 ELUSIVE FORT- After a couple of encouraging races in South Florida this guy was thrown to the wolves in the Mervin Muniz (G2) at Fair Grounds and has gone downhill since joining Raja Maleks barn. Hes facing a softer group in this event and this trainer and jockey did break trough for a $60+ dollar winner on Friday afternoon. Hes also 1 for 1 going 12 furlongs and will get the firm turf course he so desperately needs this afternoon.#10 ALWAYS FIRST- A very consistent animal in 2007, this son of Barathea came back to the races in the aforementioned Kentucky Cup Turf (G3) and he did very little running that day at 5-1. He has proven time and again that hes a serious horse going 12 panels and he has run two very strong races over this turf course. He needs to be handled with care, especially since his trainer spots his horses very well.#11 RUMOR HAS IT- The upset winner of the Ky Cup Turf (G3) as he scored in wire-to-wire fashion at almost 60-1! He will probably be able to get the lead this afternoon but theres no telling how far he can take them. Ill gamble that he comes up short today as this field just seems to have a number of horses that are better.DAY 12 RACE DU JOUR PLAY:$0.50 Trifectas#4 TRANSDUCTION GOLD with #2 TELLING, #5 GOOD REQUEST, #8 PHIL THE POWER, #9 ELUSIVE FORT, and #10 ALWAYS FIRST with ALLAnd#2 TELLING, #5 GOOD REQUEST, #8 PHIL THE POWER, #9 ELUSIVE FORT, and #10 ALWAYS FIRST with #4 TRANSDUCTION GOLD with ALLAnd$5 win on #4 TRANSDUCTION GOLDTOTAL: $50MEET TOTALS: $+133.50Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The Friday program is headlined by the $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View for three year-old fillies at a mile and a sixteenth on the grass. It will be the focus as it is the race which features our Horse du Jour. The morning line favorite is #10 ACOMA who has no turf experience but a decent pedigree for the green. She seems utterly beatable, so it would behoove any punter to explore other options. Results at this racetrack like Purim winning the 2007 Shadwell Turf Mile, Thorn Song winning the 2008 rendition, and Alwajeeha winning the QEII all have a common thread. The common thread is that those horses all had wins over the Keeneland lawn. One very attractive animal in here who has a win over the Keeneland lawn is #2 SCOLARA. A daughter of Quiet American, this gal proved herself to be an effective turf performer right off the bat as she finished 2nd, 3rd, and 1st in her first three tries on the lawn. She ultimately wound up trying stakes company in the inaugural American 1000 Guineas where she finished 2nd at 5-2 behind #8 MUCH OBLIGED. Shes been laid off since then but trainer Bill Mott does quite well with these types and his barn has been very steady at the meet. There is a great deal of pace in this event, which will certainly help this gal. At her morning line of 8-1 she is an excellent gamble.DAY 11 HORSE du JOUR: Race 9, #2 SCOLARADAY 10 RECAP: High Spirit finished fifth in the sixth on Thursday.MEET TOTALS: 9: 0-2-1Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The Friday feature is the $150,000 Pin Oak Valley View (G3) for three year-old fillies going a mile and a sixteenth on the turf. A large and talented field has been assembled and there will be a multitude of wagering opportunities for interested punters. The 7th race is an optional claimer for older horses who havent won a race this year going six furlongs on the Polytrack. The likely favorite is #7 KELLYS LANDING, who is a multiple graded stakes winner but has been inactive for quite some time.#1 CITY NUMBER- Hugh Robertson trainee is going 2nd off a layoff and exits an even 3rd place finish over the Arlington Polytrack. He hasnt really proven to be capable of competing with these types, but he has two sharp recent workouts, some back class, and comes from a good barn. You could do worse than this guy if the price is right.#2 SANTANA STRINGS- This old warrior has been hitting it hard for quite some time and now goes 2nd off a layoff for trainer Steve Asmussen. He came back to the races off a layoff at Mountaineer and finished 2nd beaten a good distance but rallied well on a track that notoriously favors speedsters. He has a win over the Polytrack in a similar race 365 days ago and considering how slowly Asmussen runners go in the morning, this guys recent drills are solid. #3 XELA- This guy was very sharp at the beginning of this year as he picked up consecutive wins at this meet on the Polytrack and turf. He has only one win since then but you can never underestimate how significant proven form over this racetrack is. He just worked sharply over this surface and lands in a race where his versatility fits nicely. He is a very good play at around 6-1.#4 NATURAL SPEED- Son of 2002 Sprint Champion Orientate is making his first start for trainer Eduardo Caramori after making all 16 career starts for Steve Asmussen. He hasnt started over the Polytrack here at Keeneland but has run well on turf, usually an ability that portends synthetic ability. He will bea part of the pace here and that makes him dangerous given that the early tempo might be dull. Seems like yet another contender in an evenly matched group. #5 NAKAYAMA ARASHI- After coming to hand at Presque Isle this guy was moved into the big leagues and he proved unable to handle it, finishing a well-beaten sixth in the Phoenix (G3). He drops in class and should bounce back from the dull effort. There has to be some level of concern about his ability to run with this caliber of animals and the price will probably not be big enough.#7 KELLYS LANDING- Multiple graded stakes winner is going to be bet heavily today based on his back class and his score in the Phoenix (G3). However, it must be noted that he was extremely dull in his two starts and he wore a bar shoe in the latter of those two efforts at Churchill. He has never been quite as tough when fresh and that is discouraging as well. It seems like the only way to make money here is to beat this son of Patton.DAY 11 RACE DU JOUR PLAY:$5 Exacta Box #1 CITY NUMBER, #2 SANTAN STRINGS, #3 XELA$10 WP on #2 SANTANA STRINGSTOTAL: $50

0 Whip(s)

The Thursday feature is an optional claimer for older fillies and mares who have not won an allowance race in 2008. A pair of supporting races including a nifty N1X allowance event for two year-olds are also on the card. That allowance race features our Horse du Jour. The 5th race is a 50k claimer for older fillies and mares going once around the Keeneland Polytrack and a contentious field has been assembled. The morning line indicates that it might be very difficult for the public to choose a clear-cut favorite in this event. Lets take a look at some of the contenders.#1 PATRICIA- This gal was on a nice mini-roll at Tampa earlier this year as she won three races in a row on the lawn. She floundered when placed against tougher and was ultimately claimed from trainer Forrest Kaelin by David Vance. She hasnt won since joining Vances barn but also has faced largely tougher company. Her complete lack of early speed would seem to make her a dicey play at her morning line of 3-1. However, do note her record at this racetrack.#3 PROMISE ME A PRIZE- Daughter of Prized hasnt been out since late August in Erie, PA but she was facing tougher company in those events. She has earned six career victories on synthetic surfaces, is working beautifully and her trainer has a positive record with horses off mid-range layoffs. This gal wont be as far off the pace as the railbird and thats a positive. She seems like an attractive alternative to the horses getting the brunt of the play. #4 CLASSIC TIARA- This gal was claimed out of her last start by trainer Tom Amoss, who wins at a rate of 29% of his recent claims. She is the main speed in here and jockey Miguel Mena might find himself isolated on the lead as they move up the backstretch. That being said, she doesnt have a wire-to-wire victory showing in her PPs and the notion that she may get free and clear will earn her plenty of support at the windows. #7 DRAGUM- Louisiana Downs invader has been running exclusively on the turf in 2008 and has run a number of solid races, including an allowance tally two back on the Franks turf course. She has a good record over the dirt, which usually portends the ability to handle synthetic surfaces and her trainer has an outstanding record with horses running on synthetics and moving to synthetics from turf.DAY 10 RACE DU JOUR PLAY:$2.50 TRIFECTA #3 PROMISE ME A PRIZE and #7 DRAGUMWITH #1 PATRICIA, #3 PROMISE ME A PRIZE, #4 CLASSIC TIARA, AND #7 DRAGUMWITH ALLTOTAL: $50MEET TOTALS: $+233.50

0 Whip(s)

The Thursday program does not feature a stakes event but a big weekend is on the horizon as the $300,000 Raven Run headlines the Saturday program. There arent as many over-stuffed fields on the Thursday program but there are a number of exciting wagering opportunities for punters that are ready to fire away. The 6th race is a $52,000 N1X allowance event for two year-olds going a mile on the lawn. A field of ten has been assembled and the favorite will likely be #2 DEPOSER, a relocated European who started in the Breeders Futurity (G1) and raced wide before finishing a respectable fourth. It seems reasonable to think that hell move forward in his 2nd outing in America with the addition of lasix. After thorough pedigree analysis there were a few pieces of information that are quite pertinent. For example, #8 HIGH SPIRIT, a gelded son of Stephen Got Even who just broke his maiden against claimers, is a half to stakes winner Swingit and the stakes-placed mare Singit. He showed significant improvement in his 2nd career start, which happened to be his first on a synthetic surface. Its quite clear he didnt beat much that afternoon but given his solid pedigree and the improvement he showed after earning some experience, hes worth a few bucks at 20-1 or more.DAY 10 HORSE du JOUR: Race 6, #8 HIGH SPIRITDAY 9 RECAP: Sealed Bid was in a perfect spot turning for home but hung a bit after getting a clear path on the rail, ultimately finishing 3rd.MEET TOTALS: 8: 0-2-1Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The midway point of the Keeneland fall meet is Wednesdays program where the featured event is a first-level allowance race on the weeds for two year-old fillies at one mile. While none of the entrants have Breeders Cup aspirations, there is a possibility that one or two of them may make some noise next year. The fourth race on Wednesdays program is a maiden special weight event for older fillies and mares at nine furlongs on the Polytrack. A large field is entered, which is no surprise given that nearly all of the maiden events at Keeneland have featured full fields. Favoritism should be split among a few contenders in here, including #2 EQUALLY, who finished a strong 2nd over the Polytrack here at Keeneland in April. She has been close to breaking her maiden on multiple occasions and is now going 2nd off the bench. A better alternative price-wise is #8 SEALED BID. A daughter of the versatile sire Langfuhr, this gal is returning off a brief layoff for trainer Rusty Arnold. Before going to the shelf she ran in a tough MSW event on the turf at Saratoga and finished evenly to grab fourth-place money. She now returns with four Polytrack drills on her wortktab and shell be ridden by leading jockey Robby Albarado. Her lone try over this racetrack was certainly solid as she finished behind Acoma, who was an eventual stakes winner and Alachua who was a winner in her next start. This gal has the versatility to be close to the pace if necessary and given that the crux of the publics attention is going to be on multi-race maidens, give her a try at 6-1 or so.DAY 9 HORSE du JOUR: Race 4, #8 SEALED BID DAY 4 RECAP: Teide finished a disappointing 4th in Sundays 7th race.MEET TOTALS: 7: 0-2-0Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The best race of the Wednesday card is the 6th, a money allowance for older fillies and mares at 7 furlongs on the Polytrack. The morning line favorite is #3 VICTORIANNA, a daughter of Tale of the Cat who has won four times in eight tries on synthetic surfaces, including one win here at Keeneland. She is 5/2 on the line. Heres a more in-depth look at the contenders:#1 MAC N MAYO- Pennsylvania-bred has had a very productive year with four wins in six starts and shes been in the exacta all six times. She has been picking up inflated purses at Presque Isle for quite some time, but we havent really seen shippers from Erie fare all that well in Lexington. The pace situation would seem to favor her this afternoon and her trainers numbers on synthetic surfaces are gaudy, but this filly has a lot to do with that. #2 QUOTA- This daughter of Seeking the Gold was originally with Steven Penrod then surfaces in NY last year with trainer Bill Mott and she did win an optional claimer at the Spa for him in August. She has won twice since, both since moving into the barn of trainer Al Stall, Jr., and he has been on a nice little roll at this meet. She likes to come from the back of the pack and thats not really an issue in here given the pace scenario, so give this gal a long look.#3 VICTORIANNA- The probable fave is exiting a poor showing in the Weekend Delight at Turfway when she was unable to make the early lead. She was coming off a nearly four month layoff that day and trainer Eddie Kenneally often does better with horses going 2nd off the bench. If she is able to get a good early position right behind Polas Place, she may just sit the perfect trip. Do note that Polas Place has beaten this filly twice.#4 POLAS PLACE- Speedy lass is also going 2nd off the bench and returns to the Polytrack, the surface over which she has earned all of her career victories. Shes a bit faster than the favorite and that could cause problems for both as this gal wont get a breather at any point and Victorianna may be a need the lead type. #5 ADHRHYTHM- After a sharp win in a classified allowance event in Erie this gal flopped twice more over the Tapeta and now returns to Kentucky for trainer Merrill Scherer. Many are going to see her :46 and 4/5 workout from last Monday and jump on this gal, but note that she seems to be a consistently fast work horse. Desormeaux takes the call today and he and Scherer have won together at a rate of 22% at this racetrack. She seems to be best at the bottom of the exotics.#6 DIMPLE PINCH- Daughter of Smoke Glacken is back in Hugh Robertsons barn as she has been shuffled between the Roberston boys for quite some time. Her record over synthetics would seem to be terrible but you have to put that in context and understand that her three starts have come against tougher company. She has a good late kick and recently worked a half-mile over this oval. If Victorianna and Polas Place go a little too quick in the early stages, this gal will benefit. #7 MEDLEY- The myth about turf horses automatically liking synthetics is being debunked by the day as turf horses take to synthetics much better when they already have prior dirt form. This gal does not and it doesnt inspire confidence that when trainer Christophe Clement makes this move he wins infrequently (1-22). She seems like an outsider but with this barn you can never completely count them out.DAY 5 RACE DU JOUR PLAY: $2.50 TRIFECTA#2 QUOTA and #6 DIMPLE PINCHwith#1 MAC N MAYO, #2 QUOTA, #3 VICTORIANNA, and #6 DIMPLE PINCH with ALL TOTAL: $50MEET TOTALS: $+283.50Good luck!

1 Whip(s)

The Sunday featured event at Keeneland is the Bryan Station at a mile on the weeds and all eyes will be on Cowboy Cal, a three-time winner on turf who missed by a neck in the Blue Grass on the Polytrack here in April. He will have to be on his toes to win this thing off the bench but he has shown immense talent on the lawn and thats worth something. Lets take a look at a few contenders:#1 READYS IMAGE- The progeny of More Than Ready have done very well on the turf and this guy did break his maiden on the Polytrack, so there are reasons to believe he will take to the turf. Those tidbits dont erase the fact that he has been atrocious of late with two absolutely horrendous efforts in a row. Hes going to be overbet because of his connections and bloodlines, he has no chance of gaining a clear lead, and he isnt even the best Todd Pletcher trainee entered in this event. #2 ST. JOE- A true POlytrack horse for course, this son of Trippi has a great deal of early speed and should be among the handful who will be involved in the opening stages of this event. He battled it out gamely to the wire in his turf debut at Kentucky Downs after contesting a hot pace and he is now going 3rd off the bench. If you can find a reason to believe that hell be able to rate off the pace, give him a try.#3 NISTLES CRUNCH After an extremely impressive turf effort over this course in April, this guy looked like a bona fide stakes horse on the lawn. He hasnt won since but we all witnessed how strong the Keeneland turf horse for course angle can be when Alwajeeha scored on Saturday in the QEII for the first time since winning the Appalachian over this course. This guy actually ran well in the Saranac given the pace dynamic that afternoon and he is definitely going to benefit from the early battle in this event. The pick to win it all hands down.#4 COWBOY CAL- Son of Giants Causeway made it clear he was a turf horse when he won his first three starts on the lawn. He failed in the Hallandale Beach and was then handled carefully by trainer Todd Pletcher throughout the spring. He made a premature move in the Derby and came out of it a tired horse, so hes just now returning off a 5+ month layoff. He is clearly the most talented horse in the race and that makes him one to handle carefully.#5 DEAL MAKING- This guy was the epitome of horribly overbet in the Kent as every amateur trip handicapper zeroed in on him after the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame at Saratoga. He was a non-factor in the Kent and the runners exiting that race have run poorly as the runner-up and an also-ran were off the board last week at Belmont and the winner finished a bad 4th in the Hawthorne Derby on Saturday. He is another who will benefit from the pace scenario today, but wont he be overbet again? And more importantly, what has he done against good horses to make you think he can win? #7 BIG STICK- This guy came into his own after a freshening by trainer Kiaran McLaughlin. He was available for $45,000 as recently as June and now three wins later hes in a Grade III stakes race. His style is perfect for the turf as he is at his best stalking the early pace before moving in the final quarter-mile. That should put him right with the favorite in the early going today and could allow him to outmove the late runners. DAY 7 RACE DU JOUR PLAY:$30 Win #3 NISTLES CRUNCH $5 Exactas #3 NISTLES CRUNCH with #2 ST.
Keeneland Horse du Jour- Sunday, October 12, 2008 (Day 7 of 17)The featured event on Sundays program is the $150,000 Bryan Station (G3) for three year-olds going a mile on the turf course. A solid field has been assembled, including Blue Grass (G1) runner-up Cowboy Cal, whos returning from a long layoff for trainer Todd Pletcher. Take a gander at the Race du Jour for more on the Bryan Station. The race immediately preceding the Bryan Station is a N2X allowance event at nine furlongs on the Polytrack. The favorite will be #4 MR. SIDNEY, who came back from a long layoff with two very strong races on the turf in New York. His lone start on conventional dirt was good even though it was way back in March 2007 at Gulfstream Park. That should calm anyones fears about whether he can handle the Polytrack. #7 TEIDE is returning off a short layoff for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin and his last start before the respite was a very solid race even though he finished fifth. He moved too soon into an extremely hot pace after racing wide nearly the entire way. He has run well when fresh in the past and his lone start over the Keeneland Polytrack was very good as he finished third against similar company in April and earned a Beyer figure of 98. McLaughlin has been working this guy on synthetic surfaces and he has his main man Alan Garcia on board this afternoon.DAY 8 HORSE du JOUR: Race 7, #7 TEIDEDAY 7 RECAP: Peruvian Hero looked to be in great position when the field turned for home in the Saturday nightcap but came up empty and kept the Horse du Jour slide going.MEET TOTALS: 6: 0-2-0Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

Keeneland Horse du Jour- Saturday, October 11, 2008 (Day 7 of 17)The Saturday program is headlined by the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup and a terrific field has been drawn. We went into great detail on this race as part of our Race du Jour feature, which has a positive ROI of over $380 dollars at the meet! The nightcap on Saturdays program is a N1X allowance event at the Beard Course distance of about seven furlongs. A solid field has been drawn, and thats something you can always expect from a Keeneland allowance event. One of the best trainers on the grounds is Kenny McPeek and weve seen his runners do very well at this meet. He has #4 PERUVIAN HERO in this spot and this son of Peruvian is returning from a sizable layoff this afternoon. Hes only made two starts in his brief career and he had a significant excuse for his only defeat. Breaking from the 11 post in a 12 horse race he hopped at the start and lost all chance. He soldiered on nicely that afternoon to finish fourth in a very respectable effort. After arriving in McPeeks barn he didnt return to the races until June of this year but did so in fine fashion as he stalked the pace and pounced en route to a win by nearly two lengths. McPeek has worked this guy steadily over the last month and a half and he lands in a race where his natural early speed will be an asset. Not only is there very little early speed in here, but the Polytrack has actually been playing quite nicely for speed horses this week.DAY 7 HORSE du JOUR: Race 10, #4 PERUVIAN HERODAY 6 RECAP: Georgetown threw in his first poor effort on the Keeneland Polytrack as he never factored into the decision in Fridays 8th race.MEET TOTALS: 5: 0-2-0Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The last Grade I race of the Keeneland fall meet is the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup for three year-old fillies going nine furlongs on the turf course. It is the centerpiece of a terrific day of racing on Saturday at Keeneland and 11 of the 12 fillies invited are in the field. Lets take a look at each contender and try to uncover what might be the right piece of information to help you make money.#1 ARIEGE- A two-time winner on Polytrack, this daughter of Doneraile Court finally broke through for a turf win in America in the Madame Jumel at Saratoga in early August. She came back in the Garden City (G1) at Belmont and finished a strong third but hung a bit in the last furlong. Her dam was the brilliant turf mare Kostroma and she was capable of winning at any distance, but this gal seems a bit distance-challenged. In terms of race dynamics she may have an edge on the late runners in here, but I get the feeling she may be wanting in the last furlong.#2 SEFROUA- This well-bred daughter of Kingmambo came over to America and made her debut stateside in the Noble Damsel (G3) at Belmont, where she faced older horses. She hit her stride late and closed nicely to finish third that day over a soft turf course. Shes now in the care of trainer Graham Motion and will be treated with lasix for the first time. European imports often benefit significantly from the addition of lasix, so lets expect a very strong effort from this gal today.#3 STORM MESA- A win in the San Clemente at old Del Mar proved this gal was not just a passing fad and while she didnt come back to win the Del Mar Oaks, she further showed shes capable of running with the best of her generation. A brief layoff has her quite fresh for this effort and her trainer scores at a high rate with runners coming off the bench. Her versatility pace-wise makes her very dangerous in here as jockey Eddie Martin, Jr. can easily opt to take up the frontrunning duties.#4 ALWAJEEHA- The winner of the Appalachian (G3) over this turf course has fallen on hard times since that score in April. She has lost three in a row but ran a respectable race in the Lake George (G2) at Saratoga. She didnt really run her race in the Garden City (G1) as she was too close to the early pace, so expect her to relax a bit more in here. The inability to compete with strong Grade II or Grade I company raises many doubts for this filly and probably makes her an outside this afternoon.#5 CLOSEOUT- An eye-catching move in her maiden victory at Fair Grounds put this gal on everyones short list of horses to watch. She has won three times since that March score and she finally put it all together in a graded stakes race last time out in the Pucker Up (G3) at Arlington. Was her defeat in the aforementioned Madame Jumel at Saratoga to Ariege a result of the way the pace shook out? Potentially, and theres no doubt that todays distance fits her like a glove. Safe to say theyll need their running shoes on to hold off this gal in deep stretch.#6 MAGICAL FANTASY- After finishing a close second in the Senorita (G3) in her American debut, this gal was considered a major contender for the serious summer stakes races on the west coast. She flopped in the Honeymoon (G2) in what looked like a Euro-bounce then never fired in the American Oaks (G1). All failures were forgotten with the Del Mar Oaks score but she greatly benefited from a pace meltdown that day when they all came back to her. That is unlikely to happen today on a turf course that has been unkind to Californians over the years.#7 ROSA GRACE- Some would argue that she was best in the Lake Placid (G2) at Saratoga where she encountered traffic trouble on numerous occasions after a poor start. She is now in the care of trainer Christophe Clement and like Sefroua she is a euro making her 2nd start in America but her first with lasix. You have to like the way shes coming into this race and her last start was too strong to ignore her this afternoon.#8 BACKSEAT RHYTHM- Shes finally found her niche with three wins on turf this year, all in her home state of New York. She was up in time through a prolonged drive in the Garden City (G1) and that was her 2nd consecutive taxing race. She has actually made only two starts on firm turf in her career and the first was a victory. The second was the American Oaks, run over a course where her handlers said she never settled down. Shes the in form horse in here and you must admit that her last two races were both awfully sharp. Expect her to be a strong factor in the lane.#9 LICKETY LEMON- The likely longest shot on the board is fresh off a win at 12 furlongs north of the border and shes only two races removed from a solid 3rd place finish at the Spa against a couple of competitors in this heat. She is 0 for 2 over this course, which is troubling, and she has been a bit slower than the best in here. #10 MY BABY BABY- She was considered a wiseguy horse in the American Oaks after a HUGE win in a N1X allowance event under the Twin Spires in early June. A tough post gave way to a very poor effort from her that afternoon but she bounced back nicely with a win in the Pleasant Temper at Kentucky Downs against older horses. She now goes 2nd off the layoff for a trainer-jockey combo that have been rather formidable at this racetrack.#11 MY PRINCESS JESS- The far outside post will not make things easy for her and she is fresh off a fourth-place finish in the Garden City (G1) where she enjoyed a very nice trip. Consecutive wins in graded stakes races led many to believe that this gal was one of the best 3YO female grassers in the country. However, Id say her last outing was a good indicator of exactly where she is against the best of her generation.Sefroua faced older horses, has since moved into a top barn, and now gets treated with lasix for her 2nd start in America. Lets try to cash in on those angles, as it is very interesting that Motions main man Ramon Dominguez has made the trip down from Delaware.DAY 7 RACE DU JOUR PLAY:$30 Win/$20 Place on #2 SEFROUATOTAL: $50MEET TOTALS: $+383.50Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

The Friday program is headlined by the Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes at 5 furlongs on the turf course for older fillies and mares. A field of ten is set to spar and there seems to be a good mixture of speed horses, stalkers, and closers, which should guarantee a very competitive, enjoyable affair that offers good wagering opportunities.#1 AMERICAN COUNTY- A speedster from the barn of Dale Romans, this daughter of Gibson County is returning from a May layoff and will now try a surface she never has before. Shes shown a great deal of early zip and is a stakes winner already but this seems like a tall order for a filly who wasnt in very good form before going to the shelf. #2 KATERBUG- After a very sharp effort in the Kentucky Cup Ladies Turf this gal is being shortened up to a distance where she has one win in one try. You can lose a great deal of money betting turf horses cutting back from two turns to sprints, and this gal, while consistent and quite fast, seems like a trap. She worked a good three-eighths last Saturday but shes going to need to get her engine cranked way earlier than normal this afternoon.#3 TALETOBETOLD was in the middle of a productive summer when she relocated to Saratoga, where she failed miserably in one start going long. She subsequently went down to Belmont and made the pace in the Positive Gal before tiring in the lane. She will be among the early runners in here and she just may be the speed of the speed. If she doesnt get the early lead, fear not, as many of her best races have come when she stalked the pace.#4 GAME N LAUGHIN- After two good races in a row at Remington, this daughter of Distorted Humor is being brought into the big leagues. A Remington shipper came in and won the Woodford on Saturday and its quite clear that this lady is in very good form. Shes one of the ones if the pace gets hot. #7 SLY STORM- A highly regarded 2YO, this gal was tried on turf after a dull effort in the Victory Ride at Saratoga on Travers day. She took to the turf quite nicely and won from off the pace at 4/5. Shell benefit from a hot pace in here, which seems like a strong possibility. Two very nice workouts since her win over the lawn show that shes clearly ready to roll.#8 CREATIVE DESIGN- The other Tom Proctor trainee is also coming off a win at Arlington after being shortened up to todays sprint distance. She may be a wet turf freak, as her best races have come on surfaces that were holding a bit of moisture. If not, she is in the mix for the win in this event, so act accordingly when constructing your Pick 4.#10 NATALICAT- is 2 for 2 on turf and exits a classy race at Turfway where she lost all chance at the start. She should appreciate some of the intanginbles being reversed in this situation as she now goes outside, tries a new surface, and benefits from being in a top barn.
The Friday program is headlined by the Buffalo Trace Franklin County for older fillies and mare sprinting five and a half furlongs on the turf course. A competitive field of nine has been assembled and you can reference our Race du Jour column for detailed analysis. The 8th race immediately precedes the Franklin County and is the 2nd leg of the late Pick 4, which is available for $.50. The favorite will be #5 ACCREDIT, who hasnt been out since an opening day victory at Saratoga where he wired the field and scored by almost five lengths. He has shown that he needs the lead to win but can be a major player stalking from second and his lone try over the Polytrack was sharp as he finished 2nd after being disqualified from the top spot. Hell have some other speedsters to deal with in here, especially the gelding drawn immediately to his outside. With two confirmed speedsters, along with #8 RADICAL FRINGE, one must try to find a legitimate off the pace possibility and that probably comes with a horse like #4 GEORGETOWN. In two career starts over Keenelands Polytrack, this guy has a win and a 2nd place finish both from off the pace. He is now going 3rd off a layoff and his last two races were not bad at all. Trainer Dallas Stewart has given him five weeks off since his last race and hes worked three times on the dirt at Churchill Downs. If the pace develops as we believe it will, this guy will very clearly benefit. At 6-1, that seems like a decent gamble.DAY 6 HORSE du JOUR: Race 8, #4 GEORGETOWNDAY 5 RECAP: Devil Approved It somehow wound up on the lead in the 4th race on Thursday and tired in the stretch.MEET TOTALS: 4: 0-2-0Good luck

0 Whip(s)

The 3rd race on the Thursday program at Keeneland is a starter allowance event for older horses who have started for a claiming price of $16,000 or less in 2007-2008 at a mile and a quarter on the Polytrack. A field of nine is lined up and with a confirmed speedster on the rail, it looks like a wide-open event that should be honestly run from start to finish. #1 SPOKALU- This gelded son of Smart Strike is making his first start for trainer Jim Corrigan and is one of two that that trainer has in this event. He has earned two wins in seven starts at Emerald Downs and when he visits winners circle, he does it emphatically. He won his last start by 10 lengths and two starts before that he broke his maiden by 18 lengths. After setting an opening half-mile of :44 and 3/5 last time out on the conventional dirt it seems like a safe bet that hell be on the lead this afternoon.#2 TONY TERRIFIC- A four-time winner, this son of Gone West will be making his first start for trainer Neil Pessin this afternoon. He has been competitive at this level for quite some time and is actually dropping out of a much tougher N2X allowance heat at Arlington Park. He is completely void of early speed and that will put him in a very tough spot this afternoon but if the frontrunners get weary, hell be the one to pick up the pieces.#3 TWISTING ROAD- Twice an in the money finisher at Keeneland, this son of Giants Causeway is coming out of a 35k claimer on turf at Arlington where he tried to rally into a slow pace on a boggy turf course while very wide. His last two starts on Polytrack were both narrow misses that led to runner-up finishes. He just worked a half-mile to tighten the screws and his trainer Dale Bennett wins all over the midwest at a very high clip.#4 SPEAKSOFTLYANCARRY- Presidential candidate John McCain referenced the saying of former President Theodore Roosevelt in the Presidential debate Tuesday evening for which this son of Real Quiet is named. He has won three races in a row and is now spotted nicely in this starter allowance heat. He took to the Tapeta at Presque Isle without an issue but the jurys still out about whether winners over that surface take to the Keeneland Polytrack. Id be more inclined to take the other Corrigan trainee based on the pace scenario.#5 BAGOGA- Cody Autrey trainee dug in gamely in a N2X optional claimer on the weeds at Louisiana last time out and is in absolutely terrific form right now. He has proven hes capable of going any distance and he is equally adept on turf and dirt. Whether he can win on synthetics will be answered this afternoon but in the meantime he is a serious win candidate. #7 STRATOSTAR- A two-time winner over the Keeneland Polytrack, this son of Pulpit has proven to be a useful old guy. He scored in a 20k starter allowance event over this racetrack in April and beat two horses he faces again today in the process. Hes in good form having just finished 2nd in a money allowance optional claimer at Turfway and the potent duo of Albarado and McPeek are teaming up to try and do it again.DAY 5 RACE DU JOUR PLAY: $1 TRI #3 TWISTING ROAD with #1 SPOKALU, #2 TONY TERRIFIC, #5 BAGOGA, and #7 STRATOSTAR with ALL$0.50 TRI #1 SPOKALU, #2 TONY TERRIFIC, #5 BAGOGA, and #7 STRATOSTAR with #3 TWISTING ROAD with ALL$1 Exacta Boxes 1,3 and 2,3 and 3,5 and 3,7TOTAL: $50MEET TOTALS: $457.50Good luck!

1 Whip(s)

The featured event on Thursdays program is the $150,000 JP MorganChase Jessamine for two year-old fillies on the grass. It is the last Breeders Cup Win and Youre In race of the year. The 4th race is a N1X allowance event for two year-olds going once around the Polytrack. A small field has been assembled, which is a true rarity when it comes to racing at Keeneland. Favoritism should be split among a handful of runners in here and that could make for some value with the leftovers. One of the supposed leftovers will be #2 DEVIL APPROVED IT. A two year-old colt by Devil His Due, this guy is fresh off a win at Presque Isle for trainer Merrill Scherer. He showed little in his debut in Erie, PA then was moved to the turf at Ellis Park for his next two outings. He gradually improved but ran the best race of his brief career to that point the first time he wore blinkers. In his 2nd start with blinkers he showed more improvement and broke through for the victory. He now lands in a spot where there should be some pace and that will definitely help a horse who likes to do his running in the late stages.DAY 5 HORSE du JOUR: Race 4, #2 DEVIL APPROVED ITDAY 4 RECAP: Janes Baby took over turning for home but was overhauled by the favorite to give us our second runner-up finish in three days.MEET TOTALS: 3: 0-2-0Good luck!

1 Whip(s)

Keeneland Horse du Jour Day 4 (Wednesday, October 8, 2008)The fourth day of the meet is headlined by a series of strong allowance races as big fields dot the card. Another big weekend is on tap as the $500,000 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) is scheduled for Saturday along with the Perryville (G3). The fourth race on Wednesdays card is a 30k N2L claimer at six furlongs on the Polytrack. There is not a great amount of proven Polytrack form in here nor are there a number of horses who have done well over this particular surface. The morning line favorite is #12 DELILAHS SEVEN, a daughter of Sky Mesa who has run two very strong races on Polytrack in her brief career. She has drawn a tough post but her style makes her post position a non-issue.Taking the favorite in a wide-open race like this is no fun, so looking elsewhere you find a perfectly logical alternative like #9 JANES BABY. Shes a daughter of Royal Academy whos making her third start off a layoff and will be going from turf to a synthetic surface. Her trainer, Walter Bindner, wins at a 29% clip with horses going turf-synthetic and this gal has proven form over Polytrack and conventional dirt. You must be careful when dealing with turf horses trying synthetics if theyve never run well on conventional dirt, but this gal has and is thus a very solid play at or around her morning line of 4-1.DAY 4 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 4, #9 JANES BABYDAY 3 RECAP: Indescribable was scratched from the Spinster thus cancelling our play.MEET TOTALS: 2: 0-1-0Good luck!

3 Whip(s)

Keeneland Race du Jour Day 4 (Wednesday, October 8, 2008)The first full week of the Keeneland fall meet begins with Wednesdays program and it is the first card of the meet that does not feature a stakes race. The fields are gigantic and that should yield a number of large payoffs and outstanding betting affairs. The 8th race is the featured event on the card, a N3X optional claimer for older horses going 7 furlongs on the Polytrack. Favoritism will be split between #5 FORTY GRAMS and #9 JOHNS ROAD, a couple of horses who have shown some ability on synthetic surfaces but collectively have plenty of knocks. Heres a look at a few contenders:#1 TIMBUCTO- This Larry holt trainee is fresh off a win in a money allowance at Turfway in wire-to-wire fashion. He has drawn the rail which should force his hand and require jockey Otto Thorwarth to hustle him to the early lead. If he is able to get free and clear he could be dangerous, but the jump in class is just a bit too significant to disregard. #2 NO FAULT- Son of Broken Vow has picked up a couple of runner-up finishes in five starts over the Keeneland Polytrack and his last outing was a troubled sixth-place finish against similar company. He hasnt been out since May but his trainer wins at a 20% clip with these types from a large sample. He has no early speed but his lone start with Robby Albarado astride was excellent, so dismiss him at your own risk.#5 FORTY GRAMS- Once highly regarded 3YO, this guy has fallen on hard times over the last year and hasnt visited the winners circle since June 2007. His trainer has not done very well on synthetic surfaces and this guy is a prime example with his 0-5 record. He showed improvement last time out when he chased the pace and settled for second but for the most part he looks like a candidate to be overbet. #8 STOLEN CHEVY- After three consecutive huge wins at the Mountain this son of Flying Chevron was thrown to the wolves with consecutive starts in graded stakes races. He showed nothing in both but that cant be held against him. He rebounded with a good effort on turf, which his connections may figure portends ability on the Polytrack. Hell be forwardly placed early, even with the shades coming off, but hes still an outsider. #9- JOHNS ROAD- The deserving favorite in this event is returning off a layoff for trainer Tom Amoss, who wins at a 27% clip with these types. He ran a very nice race over this track in mid-April and then followed it up three consecutive sharp efforts on the Tapeta and Polytracks. He just worked a blistering half-mile on Friday and should get a great pace setup this afternoon.#11- KING A.J.- Trainer Hugh Robertson and jockey Rene Douglas scored in the Sunday opener with an Arlington invader and this guy obviously took to the Polytrack quite nicely when put on it earlier this year. He is in very good form, seems to run his race no matter what the location and he is capable of running the type of speed figure that will win this race.
Keeneland Horse du Jour Day 3 (Sunday, October 5, 2008)The first week of the Keeneland fall meet closes with Sundays program and the featured event is the $500,000 Juddmonte Spinster (GI) for older fillies and mares at nine furlongs on the Polytrack. It will be a significant prep race for the Breeders Cup Ladies Classic (G1) as it is one of only three preps for this division run on a synthetic surface. The other stakes race on the program is the Bourbon (G3) and it is a Breeders Cup Win and Youre In race for the Juvenile Turf in 20 days. The Spinster brings together a number of fillies and mares who have proven they are perfectly capable over synthetic surfaces, including the talented #3 Model, a daughter of Giants Causeway who finished 2nd to Zenyatta two starts ago at Del Mar. #6 Little Belle is a Grade I winner over this track, #4 Carriage Trail a Grade 2 winner over this surface and #7 Jibboom another Grade II winner over this racetrack. Another filly who has run three good races on this track is #2 INDESCRIBABLE. She was moved into the barn of trainer Bill Mott in mid-summer after a win in the Arlington Matron (G3). She was poorly spotted from there as she first ran in the Chicago Breeders Cup Handicap (G3) at seven furlongs, a distance far too short for her liking, then in two GI stakes races on dirt. Shes now back on a synthetic track and she has earned three of her four career victories on the fake stuff. Robby Albarado, arguably the hottest rider on this circuit right now, has the mount for Mott and the pace scenario in here would seem to play into her hands. At or around her morning line of 12-1 she is certainly worth a play.DAY 3 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 9, #2 INDESCRIBABLEDAY 2 RECAP: Societys Chairman was away poorly and never factored into the decision.MEET TOTALS: 2: 0-1-0Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

Keeneland Race du Jour Day 3 (Sunday, October 5, 2008)Sundays card features a number of big fields, two competitive stakes races and a late Pick 4 sequence that seems set to yield a big payoff. The multi-race exotics at Keeneland often pay nicely and the Pick 4 is available for a $0.50 minimum. The nightcap is a typical Keeneland finale, an allowance race on turf with a number of very solid participants slated to go. The turf course has been very kind to speed horses thus far and that could have something to do with a lack of rain in Kentucky over the last six weeks. Very firm courses often allow speedsters to just keep going and the Shadwell Turf Mile and Woodford from Saturday are good examples. That makes this event even more interesting as the speed horses in here are relatively hard to trust, most notably #6 BRILLIANT BID, who faltered in the Tri State Handicap last time out. A few worth analyzing:#1 HOLY ANTHEM has shown tremendous potential in two career starts as he debuted in a MSW at Churchill Downs and closed well after he was a bit slow into stride. He then broke his maiden at Arlington Park and the race he exits seems to have been a productive one as the 2nd and 3rd place finishers have both come back to win their subsequent starts. He has the most upside in here and thats a strong angle, especially given his expected price.#2 ON FIRE hasnt been out since November but hes another lightly raced colt who has shown potential in his career. Trainer Shug McGaughey is in the midst of a very strong campaign in New York and he has long been sending live horses to Keeneland. This guy ran into some tough cookies after breaking his maiden and you have to imagine that the R&R helped his cause. #5 BLUE LION broke his maiden in his first turf start for trainer Rusty Arnold, earlier this year at Gulfstream under Edgar Prado. He has run four very strong races since then, all of which are strong enough to win this race. His style makes him prone to a great deal of trouble and he has been plagued by poor trips in each of his last three outings. It might not be a bad idea to go back to the well if the price is right.#12 AL NASR DREAM may be the right longshot in here as hes going 3rd off the bench and exits a Polytrack allowance event at Arlington where he moved far too soon and flattend out in the last two furlongs. In his first start in America he ran into a great deal of traffic and that kept him from being able to make a meaningful late run. He has a horrible post today going this distance, so hell need a good ride from a very good turf rider in Julien Leparoux.DAY 3 RACE DU JOUR PLAY: $25 Win on #1 HOLY ANTHEM$5 Exacta Boxes 1-5 and 1-12 and an extra $5 Exacta 1-12TOTAL: $50MEET TOTALS: $+567.50Good luck!

0 Whip(s)

Keeneland Horse du Jour Day 2 (Saturday, October 4, 2008)A year ago we got off to a terrific start with the Keeneland Horse du Jour when our pick Purim won the Shadwell Turf Mile at 19-1. Well try to see if lightning can strike twice as we come back to the exact same event for this years pick. There were a number of accomplished turfers in last years edition of this event but this year there are significantly more fringe players who seem to need to break through. Included among those is #9 SOCIETYS CHAIRMAN, a Canadian trained by Roger Attfield, a top conditioner from north of the border. This son of Not Impossible was started for a tag and he certainly made his connections feel quite lucky that they didnt lose this guy at the claim box that afternoon. He came out of that event and won a N1X allowance heat right here at Keeneland before narrowly missing in the Connaught Cup at Woodbine. The only bad races he has run since then were over a yielding turf course and Polytrack. He seems to prefer very firm turf and thats exactly what theyll race on this afternoon. His last start, a stakes event restricted to Canadians, was very impressive as he contested the hot pace and still held on gamely. Hes 2 for 2 at this distance and you cant underestimate how big the horse for course angle can be at this racetrack.DAY 2 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 8, #9 SOCIETYS CHAIRMANDAY 1 RECAP: Desert Stormelite rallied gamely to finish 2nd at 7-1 after she was outmoved by a graded stakes winner who picked up her first win on turf.MEET TOTALS: 1: 0-1-1Good luck!

5 Whip(s)

Keeneland Race du Jour Day 2 (Saturday, October 4, 2008)The first Saturday program of the Keeneland fall meet is loaded with stakes races as Races 5-9 are all added money events. The only non-graded stakes race is the 6th, the $150,000 Woodford at 5 furlongs on the turf course. The field is huge and the wagering should be somewhat spread, so it will be our Day 2 Race du Jour. One horse looks to receive the most support of any runner in here and thats #8 SMART ENOUGH, who has eight wins sprinting on the turf and has twice Beyered 107 or more in his career on the weeds. He was pounded down to even money in the Shakertown (G3) here in mid-April and has been laid off since. He worked a solid five-eighths two weeks ago and his trainer has a winner off this type of layoff from a limited sample. While you must recognize that this guy is the most talented in here and is the likeliest winner, you have to avoid taking a small price on a horse that is returning from a long layoff who has twice failed on this turf course.A few others worth looking at include:#2 FORT PRADO won this race last year with a sharp off the pace move under Rene Douglas. He is winless since then including 7 tries sprinting on the grass. He rallied well in the Kentucky Cup Turf Dash last time out and narrowly missed, so hes in very good form right now. There has to be some level of concern about his sudden inability to win, especially given that hell be heavily backed at the windows.#3 CHAMBERLAIN BRIDGE is an interesting animal in here on a number of fronts. He is among the few that have consistently shown early speed, hes going 2nd off a layoff, and will be re-united with the jockey who rode him to victory at Churchill in June. He might get the jump on the late runners and that is quite dangerous, in addition to Jamie Theriot being very astute on this turf course.#4 ATTICUS KRISTY has been competing nicely at this level for quite some time and will try to improve on a fourth-place finish at Kentucky Downs. He is a winner over this turf course going this distance and will be among the late runners making their presences felt late in the game. #6 DISTINGUISH enjoyed an absolutely perfect trip in winning the Brother Brown last time out at Remington and you can certainly argue that anyone who opts for Chamberlain over him is foolish. He has outfinished that rival twice in a row now and his running style may suit this race a bit better. Hes tough to look past at 10-1 or more.DAY 2 RACE DU JOUR PLAY:$25 Win/Place on #3 CHAMBERLAIN BRIDGETOTAL: $50Meet Totals: $-50Good luck!

2 Whip(s)

Keeneland Race du Jour- Day 1 (Friday, October 3, 2008)In addition to the Horse du Jour, which will appear every evening prior to a racing day by 11:00 PM EDT, the Racing Dispatch will debut a new feature for the Keeneland meet called the Race du Jour. The Race du Jour will be an extended analysis of one race on each Keeneland program. It will not always be the featured event or a stakes race but will always offer an in-depth look at the contenders and a bankroll play with a limit of $50 will be offered at the end of the analysis. The Race du Jour for opening day at Keeneland is the $400,000 First Lady (G1) at 1 mile on the turf for older fillies and mares. Over the years this has been one of the most exciting and competitive races of the fall meet. Last year Vacare won a stretch-long duel with Precious Kitten to score by a half-length and the year before Gorella defeated Karens Caper after a spirited battle to the wire. That win was enough for Gorella to be made the favorite in the 2006 Breeders Cup Mile despite facing males. This years First Lady has all the necessary elements of a terrific race. There is a good bit of early speed between #2 DREAMING OF ANNA and #5 BAYOUS LASSIE. There are classy fillies like #1 PRECIOUS KITTEN and #3 RUTHERIENNE and there are horses who might have the most upside like the fresh #4 ROSHANI and the accomplished #6 FOREVER TOGETHER. The morning line favorite is #1 PRECIOUS KITTEN and she is a mare who always receives plenty of support at the windows. A failed bid in the Beverly D. should not turn you away as that race was about a furlong too far for this gal, who has always preferred anywhere from a mile to a mile and a sixteenth. The advantage she has this afternoon is that shell get the jump on the late runners once the speedsters start to tire, which will occur at some point. She just worked well for trainer Bobby Frankel, who admitted over the summer that this daughter of Catienus was having trouble with quarter cracks. Shes certainly the one to beat but 2-1 is a bit too short. The 2006 Eclipse Award winning juvenile filly, #2 DREAMING OF ANNA finished out of the money for the first time on turf in the Beverly D. last time out. Like Precious Kitten, she prefers a bit shorter route as all of her best efforts have come at distances between 8 and 9 furlongs. She will have to deal with #5 BAYOUS LASSIE in the early stages this afternoon and that could be problematic given that both do their best running when in control of the pace. #3 RUTHERIENNE has scored the biggest win over this turf course of any competitor in here as she scored in the Jenny Wiley (G2) back in April. She is winless since that score and has actually run third in four consecutive races. Her kick seems to be dulled going longer than a mile, so the cutback in distance should help her chances immensely. The old Keeneland turf horse for course angle applies to this gal perfectly and her price is going to be right this afternoon. Shes the pick to win it all.The layoff of #4 ROSHANI is troublesome as you hate seeing a horse who was very hot go to the shelf and then return almost five months later. Id never question trainer Todd Pletchers ability to get one ready off the bench but this gal was still a cut below these before the respite. She has the right type of running style for this particular race as the pace will play into her hands and is one that should probably be included in the late Pick 4. The wire-to-wire win of #5 BAYOUS LASSIE in the Distaff Turf Mile (G3) on Derby day this year was arguably the biggest upset of the weekend as there looked to be a great deal of early speed signed on in that particular race. She has struggled since that win as shes been unable to get to a clear early lead and back the pace down. She will probably be unable to get clear once again and that makes her a definite outsider. After a nifty off the pace score in the Diana, #6 FOREVER TOGETHER seemed to be a rising start in the turf distaff division. Her trainer, Jonathan Sheppard, opted to send her to Woodbine for the Canadian (G2) in early September and she rallied gamely that day to finish third. The pace worked against her in the Canadian and she just didnt have that same kick that she had at Saratoga. Shes now been given a month off and re-surfaces here, on a turf course that always plays kindly to closers, in a race thats full of speed. #7 ROSINKA was a very consistent filly last year and she came back looking like her 5 year-old season might be her best yet. Poor efforts in the Robert G. Dick at 1/5 and the Beverly D have de-railed those plans and she is now being shortened up to a distance at which she has never been successful. She hasnt proven she can run with these types at a mile and seems like a longshot to hit the board. #8 STORMY WEST ran a very nice race to finish second to Rutherienne in the Jenny Wiley earlier this year but has fallen on hard times since as her trainer began to struggle in the middle of the summer. Its always encouraging when a horse is returning to what may be their favorite racetrack at their preferred distance, but this gal is a few notches below the best in this event. DAY 1 RACE DU JOUR PLAY: $35 Win on #3 Rutherienne $5 Exactas 1,4,6 with 3TOTAL: $50Good luck!

7 Whip(s)

Keeneland Horse du Jour- Friday, October 3, 2008 (Day 1 of 17)Another Keeneland meet is set to start with Fridays program and as has become customary of the fall meet, the stakes racing is spectacular. There are two Grade I events on Fridays card with five more stakes race set to be run Saturday and two more Sunday. The First Lady (Race 8) is highlighted in our new Race du Jour feature. The 6th race is a N$Y allowance event for older fillies and mares going a mile and three-sixteenths on the turf course. The Keeneland lawn is a bit tricky in that it is heavily banked and features a slight incline through the stretch. It generally favors closers and off the pace types, especially in the fall meet, but its always best to take your own notes, watch races and form an opinion you believe to be strong. The race in question, as most Keeneland events do, brings together shippers from all over the country including Louisiana, California, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kentucky, and New Jersey. The one who is the farthest from home is #3 DESERTSTORMELITE, a four year-old daughter of Chester House who has made all eleven of her lifetime starts in California for trainer Eric Kruljac. Shes been relocated to the barn of Graham Motion, a top east coast conditioner with turf horses whos winning at an 18% clip this year. In her last outing Desertstormelite tugged at her jockey, which is problematic going 11 furlongs, so she had nothing left when the running started. She shortens up a furlong and a half in here and her record on turf this year going two turns is 6: 3-2-1. Motion has worked her twice on the Tapeta track at Fair Hill and that is a course known for building stamina. This gal is 6-1 on the morning line and could be a hidden gem in what will be a terrific betting race.DAY 1 HORSE du JOUR: Race 6, #3 DESERTSTORMELITEGood luck!

8 Whip(s)

The Saratoga meet has come and gone and racing fans were treated to a number of captivating finishes, championship performances, rain of epic proportions and one conclusion that everyone reaches by nightfall on Labor Day. How many days until it starts again? Del Mar will finish their meet on Wednesday and then California racing will take a three-week vacation. Saturday we witnessed reigning Horse of the Year Curlin's debut at Saratoga. It was a workmanlike win, not the dominating effort we've grown used to expecting from the powerful chestnut colt. He worked against the grain of the racetrack and caught a horse who is a bona fide horse for course. Did it look more like Big Brown's Haskell than Curlin's Dubai World Cup? Sure, it did, but it took nothing away from the spectacular horse that is Curlin. After the victory we heard an inkling of what might be a surprising announcement from the Curlin camp. Owner Jess Jackson had been steadfast in maintaining that the Breeders' Cup Classc, and a potential showdown with Big Brown, was not in the cards. On August 13, Jackson said this in an article on bloodhorse.com, "As to the Breeders' Cup, it is not part of my current plan for Curlin." Suddenly, yesterday, in the aftermath of seeing his champion win again, trainer Steve Asmussen said this to David Grening of the DRF regarding a potential Breeders' Cup Classic appearance: "It's something that everybody would like to see," Asmussen said of a Big Brown-Curlin showdown. "I'm curious." Was that what we needed to hear? Is he going? It's too soon to tell but the stance has obviously softened and the sportsman in Jess Jackson and Steve Asmussen is obviously speaking loudly. Has there been a potential clash in horse racing that will be as exciting as this in the last ten years? The IEAH camp has already set the date for their Classic appearance and they were lucky enough for Monmouth to offer them a Breeders' Cup shower in mid-September.So might it be on the horizon? It's enough to lead me to believe we just might get what we want.Contact Nick Tammaro at NTamm1215@gmail.com

1 Whip(s)

The penultimate card of the 2008 meet is headlined by a couple of graded stakes races, the Saranac for three year-olds and the Spinaway for two year-old fillies. The nightcap is a claimer for older fillies and mares going a mile on the inner turf. Occasionally the final week of the Saratoga meet features a number of shippers that fare well and #3 TALENTED PRINCESS is shipping in for high percentage trainer Peter Walder. She's also shortening up from a 14 furlong event at Philly Park and will be re-united with Ramon Dominguez, the tomahawk-whipping leading rider at Delaware.
Travers Day is finally here and the field for the Saratoga signature event is outstanding. A full starting gate will greet the wagering public and that is always good news. One of the supporting stakes races on the undercard is the $200,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap for older horses going a mile and an eighth on the inner turf course. Ten are slated to go in here but there is very little early pace among this group. That could put #2 THORN SONG in a very powerful position and he is an animal who has always done well on the Saratoga turf courses. Here's to hoping Julien Leparoux can get the lead on Thorn Song and bottom this field out. DAY 28 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 9, #2 THORN SONGDAY 27 RECAP: Rock Key was placed 2nd via disqualification after being passed and interfered with in midstretch.Good luck!

21 Whip(s)

The Friday program at Saratoga is headlined by the $400,000 Personal Ensign (G1) at a mile and a quarter for older fillies and mares. The fifth race on the card is a long way from a graded stakes event but an exciting wagering opportunity is available. #9 ROCK KEY is dropp[ing back in for a tag after trying MSW company last time out. The last time this gelded son of Rock and Roll was in for a tag he missed by a narrow margin against a tough field. He is getting a huge rider change and is worth a gamble at 8-1.DAY 27 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 5, #9 ROCK KEYDAY 26 RECAP: Due to technical difficulties the Horse du Jour took a one-day hiatus.Good luck!

2 Whip(s)

The fifth week kicks off with Wednesday's program and finally, a forecast that looks promising. The featured event today is the Albany with Tin Cup Chalice eyeing the Big Apple Triple. The sixth event on the card is a 35k claimer for older horses going a mile and a sixteenth on the inner turf course. A typically good field has been assembled and there are knocks on the favorite. #2 ENCINAS benefited from an absolutely perfect trip last time out where he tracked a moderate pace, dove towards the inside and never lost a bit of ground while grinding out a victory. He will be lucky to get a repeat of that trip today.#6 REAL QUALITY is dropping back into this open claimer after trying optional claimers last time out. His last try against open claimers led to a handy win from well off the pace. There should be plenty of early speed in here to set this guy up late. If he is available at 9/2 or so, he is a solid bet.DAY 25 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 6, #6 REAL QUALITYGood luck!

3 Whip(s)

Saturday's program is highlighted by a couple of Grade I stakes races, the Sword Dancer and Alabama. Neither field is very large but both have a few heavy hitters. The opener is a 67k N2L allowance event going 7 furlongs on the main track. Favoritism will be divided between #3 JOPPA FLAT'S and #5 NATIONAL PRIDE. The former just broke his maiden with an impossibly huge Beyer figure of 100 while the latter flopped as the favorite two weeks ago when he was away poorly from the gate. This event certainly has a number of runners who can bring a significant late kick, but it lacks a true speedster. That's where #7 PEWTER comes into the fray. He is going 3rd off the layoff, dropping out of two stakes races that were restricted to Canadian-breds, and has two very sharp workouts to increase his speed. If he can find a way to get the lead here, they may be unable to catch him.DAY 22 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 1, #7 PEWTERDAY 21 RECAP: Much Obliged didn't run at all in the Lake Placid.Good luck!

8 Whip(s)

Sunday's program is yet another where an iffy forecast will linger over the afternoon. Be sure to pay close attention to the program changes and make the necessary adjustments if races are transferred to the main track. The 10th race of the afternoon is a N1X optional claiming event for 3YO and up going once around the old Saratoga oval. A field of 7 will go after a scratch and all eyes will be on #2 DISCREET TREASURE. A half to the mysterious wonder-horse Discreet Cat, this guy won at first asking in triumphant fashion as he fell 16 lengths behind and rallied to win going away by over 12 lengths. That was against a very poor field in a race that had been taken off the turf and the wet track may have considerably helped his chances. #7 SCREEN TO SCREEN is fresh off a very strong effort against a similar field where he contested the pace throughout while racing extremely wide and eventually tired in the lane to finish 3rd beaten just over two lengths. He will have no issue if the rains fall as his maiden win came over a sloppy track. At 4-1 he's a good alternative to the overbet favorite, Discreet Treasure.DAY 17 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 10, #7 SCREEN TO SCREENDAY 16 RECAP: Closeout rallied gamely at almost 4-1 to check in 2nd.Good luck!

8 Whip(s)

Saturday's program at Saratoga lacks the fire power of a normal Saturday but it is a very competitive card with a great deal of possibilities. The 7th race is the Madame Jumel for 3YO fillies going a mile on the yielding turf course. Favoritism will be split among a number of horses, including #5 ARIEGE and #9 SEA CHANTER. The problem with both of those fillies is that they are returning off layoffs. #8 CLOSEOUT has much better recent form and is fresh off a win in the Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park where she circled the field on the far turn and powered away.Closeout is 8-1 on the morning line and should get a great pace setup in here, so at anything near her morning line price, load up.DAY 16 HORSE DU JOUR: Race 7, #8 CLOSEOUTDAY 15 RECAP: Racing was cancelled on Friday after two races because of inclement weather.

6 Whip(s)
